The Civil War is probably best remembered as an era of tremendous beards. Among thick competition, one beard stands out among the fray: that of Ambrose E. Burnside. Yes, Burnside is the namesake of "sideburns", although the modern examples do little justice to their initial incarnation. It should be immediately obvious to all that Ambrose, or 'Bro' as I shall henceforth refer, did not give half a shit what people thought about his facial hair. More impressive still is the fact that he was able to wed Mary Richmond Bishop while sporting this beard.
Perhaps best known for his role as a Union Army general, Bro was also a governor and US Senator, in addition to spending time as an industrialist and inventor.
Quote:
"The habit of declaring sympathy for the enemy will not be allowed. Persons committing such offenses will be arrested with a view toward being tried, or sent beyond our lines to the lines of our friends."
